Based on census records for Newberger, it seems likely that Huff’s widow Ida married Newberger after Huff died in 1897. Ida’s son Ferdinand Huff, Jr., born Sept. 1887, later changed his surname to Newberger. Two tintypes seen by Newberger in Asbury Park circa 1901, one with mention of Huff Studio, the other without.

Just like to add with respect to your list of studio addresses and dates, when I used those Newark directories on Ancestry, I found that they misindexed some of them, i.e. you look at a page and think it is from a certain year but sometimes it is actually a page from another year’s directory. Only by going to the beginning of the directory can you verify that the year you think you are looking at is correct. What I found for Huff is included in my list, with a few differences from yours, of 19th century NJ photographers at saretzky.com Included on my list is Huff’s 301 Lake Drive, Asbury Park, studio in 1896-1897.

Found some more on Ferdinand Huff. Photographer Joseph Kirk lived at the same address as Huff’s mother Sarah, whose husband had deserted her in 1853, beginning in 1862. Ferdinand is also listed at the same home address in 1865. Kirk married Sarah in 1868, It seems likely that Ferdinand Huff becoming a photographer had something to do with Kirk. Also Ferdinand’s brothers also became photographers, at least for a while. Regarding Ida’s son Ferdinand Huff Jr. in my earlier comment, while he is listed with surname Newburger in the 1930 census, he was buried with the name Huff, so it appears that he didn’t officially change it to Newburger.
